Questions homeowners ask us
Straight answers about how the visits work, what things cost, and what we can help with. If your question is not here, call (804) 442-6117 and ask.
Getting started
How do I get started?
Three ways, whichever suits you. Fill out the form on the Book a Tech Review page, call (804) 442-6117, or email support@ultratechpc.com. You will usually hear back within 24 hours.
What is a Tech Review, and what does it cost?
It is a $49 walk-through of the technology you already have, and it is thorough on purpose. We go through your Wi-Fi coverage and performance, the health and security of your devices, how reliable your home office is, whether your files are actually backed up, and how the network is put together.
Afterward you get a written scorecard by email, so the findings are yours to keep and to act on in your own time. It comes with specific recommendations and a clear next step, which might be a one-time fix, a quote for a larger project, or an ongoing support plan.
Move forward with the work within 7 days of getting your scorecard and the $49 is credited toward it, so you are paying for the job itself. The credit applies once per household.
When are appointments available?
Weekdays, evenings, and weekends. Tell us what works for your schedule when you book and we will fit around it.
Do you come to the house, or is this handled remotely?
Both, depending on the problem. Plenty of things get solved remotely in a single session, and that is faster for everyone. Anything hands-on gets an on-site visit: Wi-Fi coverage, equipment placement, new hardware, cabling, or a machine that will not start.
Do you ever need to take a device with you?
Sometimes, when a repair needs bench time that is not practical to do in your living room. You hear about it before anything leaves the house and you sign off on it. Most bench work is finished and back with you within 72 hours, and a more involved case can run longer, in which case you hear that up front.
Most visits are handled in your home or remotely.
Where we work
What areas do you serve?
Mechanicsville, Glen Allen, Hanover County, and the Greater Richmond area of Virginia. On-site and remote support are both available across that area.
What if I am just outside that area?
Ask anyway. Work outside the standard service area is often still possible, and a travel charge may apply. Remote support has no geographic limit at all.
Cost
How much does residential tech support cost?
Most one-time jobs are quoted at a fixed price before any work starts. When the scope is not clear yet, support is $95 an hour with a one-hour minimum, and a standard service call fee may apply. Optional monthly plans start at $15 a month.
The full breakdown is on the residential pricing page.
Do I need a monthly plan, or can I just book once?
Either works. If you have one specific problem, book one-time help and that is the end of it.
A monthly plan fits better when you want ongoing device monitoring, security updates, priority support across the household, and discounted on-site visits. The Tech Concierge covers that side.
What if the problem turns out to be unfixable?
The time spent is still billed. Diagnostic work is what tells you where you actually stand, and the hours that prove a drive has failed or that a machine is past economical repair are the hours that stop you spending more on it.
We flag a dead end as early as we can see one. You hear about it while there is still a decision to make, along with what the sensible alternatives cost.
What we help with
Can you fix slow or patchy Wi-Fi?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we take. We look at where the router sits, where the dead spots are, how old the equipment is, and how the network is configured.
Sometimes the answer is a mesh system. Often it is tuning what you already own. More on the home Wi-Fi and networking page.
Can you set up a home office that holds up for real work?
Yes. Reliable Wi-Fi, secure device configuration, VPN connectivity, monitors and peripherals, and a backup that actually runs. See home office support.
Can you help protect family photos and personal files?
Yes. Setting up a backup that runs on its own, keeping security updates current, and turning on multi-factor authentication for the accounts that matter are all part of residential work.
The photos are usually what people care about most, and they are usually the least protected thing in the house.
Do you work on Macs as well as Windows PCs?
Both. Our certifications cover Microsoft, security, and macOS.
What kinds of devices do you work on?
Computers and laptops, home and small-business networks, routers and Wi-Fi equipment, printers, and smart-home devices such as cameras, doorbells, thermostats and smart speakers.
Phone setup is included. If email will not send on your phone, or it will not stay on the Wi-Fi, that is something we sort out. Physical repair sits outside what we take on, which covers screens, charging ports and batteries, and televisions sit outside it as well.

Will you explain things in plain language?

Several customers have said exactly that in writing. You can read them on the reviews page.
Still have a question?
